About

Project Description

Myrtle Avenue Bird Town (MABT) is a habitat in Fort Greene created for native birds. MABT includes a collection of over fifty birdhouses and feeders meant to attract and accommodate our avian friends. MABT is created to educate local residents about their animal neighbors and involve them in city parks and green spaces.

The project creates an interesting and eye-catching spatial condition by filling the trees with birdhouses and feeders. The birdhouses and feeders are constructed in new and innovative ways, reconsidering the shapes traditionally associated with the birdhouse. They express creative use of both natural, recycled, and found materials. The project employs experimental fabrication, detailed carpentry, and materials science. MABT is an outlet for inspired creativity, nature, and community to intersect and thrive together.

Myrtle Avenue Bird Town will be on display through December 2010. The installation is located at two sites: the Northwest corner of Fort Greene Park at Myrtle Avenue and St. Edwards Street and Person Park at Myrtle Avenue and Carlton Avenue.

Artist Profile

Wongoers is Jennifer Wong and Daniel Goers.

Wongoers is a collaboration between a stuffy engineer and an eager designer. When their forces in carpentry, fabrication, and structural calculations combine, art is abound! Their artwork reflects their backgrounds, but gives breathing room to their whimsical ideas. They hold animals dear to their hearts and take inspiration for their art from mother nature (you know, trees and stuff). Wongoers hopes you enjoy their artwork as much as they enjoy imagining and making it.

How It Happened

Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership (MARP) put out a call for proposals for temporary public sculptures along Myrtle Avenue in the Fort Greene and Clinton Hill districts in Brooklyn, NY. Wongoers submitted their proposal with high hopes and big dreams. MARP and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation approved the Wongoers proposal and Myrtle Avenue Bird Town is now underway.
